Melvin E. Sweinhagen, 88, of Napoleon, Ohio died May 18, 2010 at his residence.Melvin E. Sweinhagen, 88, of Napoleon, Ohio died May 18, 2010 at his home. He was born on December 24, 1921 in Adams Twp., Defiance, Ohio to the late John and Mary (Meyer) Sweinhagen. On February 25, 1943, he married Lola E. (Eickhoff) Sweinhagen, who survives in Napoleon, Ohio.
Mel was a material clerk at General Motors Central Foundry in Defiance for 35 years retiring in 1984 and a member of the UAW Local 211. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Napoleon, where he served as an elder, choir member, witness and outreach, and the stewardship board.
He is survived by his wife, Lola, and children, Judy Martin and Jerry (Karen) Sweinhagen all of Napoleon, Ohio; Jeffrey (Penny) Sweinhagen of Grand Rapids, Ohio; Joel (Rebecca) Sweinhagen, and daughter-in-law, Vickie Sweinhagen all of Defiance, Ohio; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death a son, James and a great granddaughter, Stefanie Marie; brothers, Fred Bruns, Elmer Sweinhagen and a sister Ruth Richards.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 21, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Napoleon, officiating Pastors Peter Marcis, Charles Kramer, and John Holyer.
A lunch will immediately follow the funeral service at the church.
Committal Services will will be held on Friday at Riverview Memory Gardens in Defiance, Ohio at 2:00 PM following the lunch.
Visitation will be on Thursday at Rodenberger Funeral Home in Napoleon from 2-5 and 6-8 PM and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Suggested memorials are to St. Paul Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or to St. Paul Lutheran School or to a charity of the donor's choice.
